- This story tells of a young girl of the black duck people who one day did not heed the teachings of her elders as she grew into a young woman. She had been the target of the Water Rat for a long time. He has wanted her for his wife, and so, had observed her daily activities and habits as she grew. His opportunity finally came and he abducted her and made her his wife. From this relationship and consequent pregnancy came the creation of a new species of animal, the platypus. The young new mother, because of her children’s appearance, experienced many forms of abuse, loneliness and torment.
