- This early example of Eastern Desert painting, Kathleen Kemerr(e)'s Bush Florals, depicts bush bananas, passionfruit, tomatoes, and the large flowering tobacco bush — plants tied to the Awely(e) (Women’s Dreaming) ceremonies. Through precise dotting and layered tonal shifts, Kemarr(e) evokes the abundance of plant life tied to women’s ancestral responsibilities. Her work draws directly on women’s ceremonial knowledge, making visible the connections between Country, food sources, and cultural custodianship.
