Artwork story
Painted at Wurdejai near Ramingining, this work depicts Wangara, or ancestral spirit beings, central to ceremonial life in Central Arnhem Land. Jimmy Angunguna’s country lay along the Blyth River, and his distinctive hand can be seen in the bold alternation of red, white, and black figures against rarrk-inflected fields. His bark paintings are represented in major institutional collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria.
