Janie Kulyuru Lewis received her education in Adelaide before relocating to Amata over a decade ago, where her daughter was born. Originally specialising in batik, she transitioned to painting as the demand for batik waned. Janie often paints the Tjukurpa Waru, or Fire Story, a creation story inherited from her mother. Her mother's country is Watarru, and her father's country is Aparatjara.
