Congratulations, Lily Karadada, on 106 Years!

The great Kalumburu artist Lily Karadada turned 106 last week, a remarkable milestone. Lily is among the most significant Wandjina painters of her generation. Working in natural ochres from her country in the north-west Kimberley, she renders the Wandjina, the rain spirit and creation ancestor of the region, in a style instantly her own: compact figures with distinctive pointed shoulders, emerging from a veil of rain-like dots. Her work has been shown across Australia, Europe and Asia, and in 2003 she was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal for her contribution to art. She remains one of Australia's most important living Aboriginal artists, and we send her our warmest wishes.
