- Artwork story
- This painting tells the dreamtime story of the initiation of young girls. During this special time the older women of the Nungarrayi and Napaltjair skin groups pass sacred information onto the young women of the tribe.
The central circle represents the ceremonial area. The lines represent special dancing sticks, a very important part of the tribal ceremonies. Women dance all night during these ceremonies and then sleep at dawn. The large curved shapes represent the older women. These women watch over to make sure the young girls are listening as the elders pass on information. The smaller U shapes represent the young girls. This ceremony takes place at Duck Pond in the Northern Territory.
