Artwork story
Mitjili Napurrula was renowned for paintings that depicted the Watiya Tjuta (mulga) tree native to her father's homeland of Uwalki, near Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff) in Central Australia. These artworks visually record the history of spear-making, an essential aspect of traditional men's business in her culture. Mitjili was a Pintupi woman from the Ikuntji region. She was taught key imagery by her mother and began painting at the Ikuntji Women's Centre in 1992. Instead of traditional dot paintings, she used highly stylised, bold design shapes, bright colours, and dynamic lines to represent the trees, roots, and sandhills of her homeland. Her paintings are held in major Australian institutions, including the Art Gallery of NSW and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
