Artwork story
This Jukurrpa (dreaming) comes from Yakurdiyi, a cave and rockhole south-east of Yuendumu. In the Dreamtime, Possum Ancestors performed a secret/sacred ceremony to do with kurdiji (initiation ceremonies for young men). The pole in the centre is a witi, ceremonial spear with jinjirla, a white flower on the top. It is danced around and then set alight at the completion of the ceremony. The ceremony of Possums were spied on by Jajirrdi, native cats. The ‘U’ shapes are the Possums dancing are the Jajirrdi interlopers. The Possums discovered the Jajirrdi hiding and watching them and a huge fight took place. Neither side won and there were many casualties. Eventually the Jajirrdi went back to their own homelands and the possums travelled on through their own country. This Jukurrpa belongs to Japaljarri and Jungarrayi men and Napaljarri and Nungarrayi women.
