- Artwork story
- Peter Thomas's series of portraits of the first-generation painters of the East Kimberley includes Hector Jandanay. He painted Ngarrgooroon, his mother's Country north of Purnululu, in earth tones and a restrained palette, with irregular hill forms and open space. He came to painting through his work with the Bough Shed School at Warmun, which opened in 1979 and where he became chairman. For the 1994 Krill Krill ceremony at Warmun he painted ancestral owl spirits on board, work that has been compared to early Christian icons. The owl in this portrait echoes those paintings.
