Artwork story
Djul'djul is the daughter of the famous Galpu clan artist Mithinarri Gurruwiwi. Her art is distinguished by its meticulous rarrk (cross hatching) and its balance of sculptural form with painted surface.
This finely carved and ochre-painted pole by Djul'djul depicts the ancestral beings Minhala (bandicoot) and Wurran (cormorant), central figures within the artist’s clan cosmology. Poles of this kind are rare outside institutional collections and are closely tied to the ceremonial traditions of north-east Arnhem Land.
