ARTWORK STORY
These works come from the area in Victoria of the Yorta Yorta people. They were made by an oral historian concerned with the Barmah Forest in Victoria. He learnt the traditional methods from the remaining elders during 1990’s. He made the stone axe head the traditional way and used white wattle for the binding of the head to the shaft as he did for the handle of the shield - the traditional wood used for this. The ochre on the shield is also from the traditional sources and in the traditional design. The wood for the shield is river red gum from the Barmah Forest.
The craftsman made very few pieces and would not make them commercially. He was purely interested in the traditional craft and methods and oral history. They would be of interest to a state gallery/museum. He wanted to preserve the knowledge of the craft authentically.
