ARTWORK STORY
Men's ceremonial coolamon painted in the style of Johnny Warangkula/Kaapa/Billy stockman. A coolamon is a traditional multipurpose vessel used by First Nations peoples across many regions of Australia. Hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood—often shaped through controlled burning—it was traditionally used for carrying water, gathering foods, personal belongings, and, in some communities, for cradling infants. The form varies by region, but is typically oval with gently raised sides and a smooth, burnished interior. Coolamons hold both practical and cultural significance, reflecting a deep understanding of Country and resource use, and remain important objects within ceremonial and everyday life.
