Artist: Artist Once Known | Title: Boomerang | Year: | Medium: Carved wood replete with fine adzed markings front & back & shiny old patina | Dimensions: 67 cm
ARTWORK STORY
The boomerang possibly developed over time as a modification of the throwing stick. Not all Aboriginal people made or used boomerangs. In some areas they were used in the past, but later abandoned; in other areas many different forms were made.
Boomerangs were widely traded across Australia into areas where they were neither made nor used in hunting. Such boomerangs might have been used in ceremonies as ritual objects, or as clapsticks to accompany their singing of songs.
