Artist: Artist Once Known | Title: Coolamon Central Australian 19th Century Baby Carrier | Year: 19th century | Medium: Wood carving (stonecarved) | Dimensions: length: 50cm
ARTWORK STORY
Carved from a single piece of desert hardwood and shaped through controlled heating and scraping, the vessel’s deep, gently curved form allowed infants to be safely cradled and transported across Country. Coolamons of this age often show a smooth, burnished interior from prolonged handling, and a dark patina built up through natural oils, ochres, and smoke. While highly functional, these carriers also reflect traditional knowledge passed through generations—knowledge of material selection, tool use, and the care of family.
