Maria Josette Orsto was born in 1962 and is the daughter of Jean Baptiste and Declan Apuatimi. Trained by her father in the art of carving and painting, Orsto is prolific in many different media including acrylic and ochre on canvas and paper, batik, etching, linocut, woodcut, lithography and wood sculpture. Maria Josette Orsto was the first Tiwi woman to hold a solo exhibition.
She was commissioned by Australia Post to design artwork for the September 1997 and 1999 prepaid envelopes. Josette was a finalist in the 2003 20th Telstra Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award.
